Preparing for Cataclysm – What can we do now?
Everyone is thinking about Cataclysm. Well most of us are. Someone posed a question to me. What can we do to prepare for Cataclysm today? That got me thinking.
I came up with 6 tips that can help you prepare for Cataclysm.
Tip #1: Get the Best in Slot Gear
When I went from BC to Wrath, I expected that the greens I’d get to instantly upgrade all the epics I got from Sunwell. It just didn’t happen. Virtually nothing got replaced until I started doing raids and heroics.
With that in mind, go out and get all the best in slot gear you can get your greedy little hands on. This will give you an extra boost when Cataclysm hits.
I suspect that having a range of trinkets will be a good investment.
So how do you do that? By following tip #2.
Tip #2: Get into the guild you want now
Towards the end of each expansion there are always raiders who decide they’ve got the gear they want and they’ll take a break until the next expansion comes out. This creates an opportunity for you.
Those guilds often still want to raid, which means they’ll need to find a replacement. That can be you. Learn everything you can about Holy Paladins now and get into your dream guild now.
I’d suggest not leaving it until Cataclysm hits. You’ll want to be entrenched in a good solid guild before the expansion. When Cataclysm hits, every man and his dog will re-enter the game. Lots of raiding guilds will receive a flood of new apps of people rejoining the game. Get in before the rush and become a trusted, reliable part of the team and secure your spot for Cataclysm.
Tip #3: Research
Read web sites for new information. Even though there will highly likely be changes made to the classes before Cataclysm goes public it’s really a benefit to read about new abilities. Not only that, take the time to consider how it’ll change your healing and user interface.
Get on to the PTR (Public Test Realm)
If you want to take it to the next level, get yourself on the test realm and try it out. Learn the ins and outs of healing before Cataclysm goes live. Work out how you want to level whether you’re going to level through questing or through instances. If you’re going to level through instances, it’s really an advantage to know them in advance. A good healer can make a run go faster.
Tip #4: Get your gold under control.
When Cataclysm hits, I believe that it’s going to be important to have your gold under control. By this I mean have enough gold saved up that you’re not going to have to concentrate on how you’re going to make gold and still be able to afford the new things you need.
You’re going to want new gems, enchantments, crafted BOE’s epics early on and you’re also going to want to level your professions.
Level your Alts and their professions. If you’re going to want alts in Cataclysm get them to level 80 now. Level their professions now while the costs to level them are low. It’s likely that the prices for those mats will rise when Cataclysm hits.
Earn your gold now if you’re broke. If you’re broke, don’t wait until Cataclysm to start making gold. Make your gold now! While it’s a little tough to make gold late in an expansion, it’s important to understand that when Cataclysm hits, it’s going to take gold to make gold.

Tip #5: Clean out your bank
I know I do it and I’m sure that you’ve done it too. I’ve got way too many things stored in my bank. Before Cataclysm this, it’s an idea to clean it out. Get rid of things you’re not going to use.
Tip #6: Max out your Quest Log
It worked when burning Crusade went into Wrath of the Lich King so I’m going to assume that it’ll work when Cataclysm hits. Most people were clearing their quest log where the smart few stocked up on quests, completed them but didn’t hand them in until WoTLK hit. They got a quick XP boost from the work they did before the patch. If this works in Cataclysm, it’ll also be a good idea to duplicate.
