Healing in 3.2: Battered Hilt
First of all, the Battered Hilt is a drop that starts a quest chain. It drops from both bosses and mobs in the new heroic 5 man dungeons.
- Forge of Souls
- Pit of Saron
- Halls of Reflection
The item reward for Holy Paladins is either a tasty iLvl 251 mace: Hammer of Purified Flame or the tasty Sword of the same item level: Quel'Delar, Lens of the Mind.
The rewards themselves are very nice.
So what's the problem?
Battered Hilt is a Bind on Equip item. It means that you will likely have everyone in the group roll on the item. That's fair, but what does suck. Some people go, roll on it, just so they can sell it.
Of course most people would be tempted. I've seen it sell for as little as 3k and I've heard it selling for as much as 20k. (Yes, I'm kicking myself for not grabbing it for 3k, but at the time, I didn't really know what it was and by the time I found out, it was already snapped up).
I've heard various stories about the drop rate on this item. I've read that it's as high as 4% on all mobs and bosses, and I've also heard it's as low as 1-2% only on certain mobs. Basically, it doesn't drop very often and every class can use it.
Some people are saying wait a while for it to come down in price. While this is probably true, that supply will rise since it's xmas holidays and there are going to be masses of kiddies running it non-stop, the price often comes from high demand. Until a better (or similar) weapon becomes available, this is one of the better weapons you're going to be able to get without stepping into a 25 man raid. In other words, don't expect the demand to fall, but prices will come down as people look at trying to get it for their alts.
Last thing to be aware of. It is a quest item. If you've done the quest (even if you bought the hilt), you're not going to be able to roll on it to sell. Those who can afford to buy it aren't going to really be worried about this, but it does let those who won it before to sell it and roll on another.
If you see it drop, ROLL NEED ON IT. Don't make a mistake and roll greed on it. I haven't heard of anyone doing that, and I don't want to either!
A thought, if you're really dedicated and want it and cannot afford the steep price tag. Farm the trash (solo if you can). If it doesn't drop, run out, reset the instance and start again until it does drop for you.
Oh, did I forget to mention, there is a quest chain. It's about 13 quests you need to complete. You will have to go back into the instances to complete the question, but can be done on normal modes.
Have fun obtaining your uber epic weapon!
