Healing in 3.3: All you wanted to know about Lay on Hands but were afraid to ask
Lay on Hands is a healing and a damage prevention spell all rolled into one.
How it works: Heals a friendly target for an amount equal to the Paladin's Maximum health and restores 1950 of their mana.
For those who haven't taken a close look at this spell: It costs zero mana. That's right, it's free to cast.
It does have a 20 minute cooldown, but that can be reduced to 12 minutes with a Minor Glyph: Glyph of Lay on Hands and Improved Lay on Hands.
Glyph of Lay on Hands: Reduces the cooldown of your Lay on Hands spell by 5 minutes.
Since there is a severe lack of decent Minor Glyphs for Holy Paladin's, this Glyph is going to be a must have for you. It has a decent function to boot.
Glyph of Divinity:
Glyph of Divinity: Your Lay on Hands grants twice as much mana as normal and also grants you as much mana as it grants your target.
While it's not really used any more it's definitely useful in certain situations. It'll also increase the mana returns to 3900 mana (and you get it too) when you cast it on another, even someone who isn't a mana user. That means: If you cast it on your warrior tank you'll still get 3900 mana.
What makes this most interesting, cast it on yourself and you'll get both 3900 mana bonuses, making it a 7800 mana boon for you. Beacon of Light will even pick up the healing and copy it too but beacon will not the damage prevention buff.
Don't get too caught up in this, there are better options. Glyph of Beacon of Light is better for saving mana therefore Glyph of Divinity comes up 4th or 5th so it doesn't really get used.
Improved Lay on Hands Talent:
Improved Lay on Hands rank 2: Grants the target of your Lay on Hands spell 20% reduced physical damage taken for 15 seconds. In addition, the cooldown for your Lay on Hands spell is reduced by 4 minutes.
This doesn't help with prevention with spell damage. It is useful on heavy hitting physical damage, for example, Impale from Gormok the Impaler. When you're learning this fight, it's not useful to use on each attempt since its cooldown is so long, but it is useful to have an additional cooldown when someone dies before their cooldown is used.
Things to know about Lay on Hands:
+spell power does not increase your lay on hands.
It's not worth stacking stam so you can cast bigger Lay on Hands (cast on yourself to use beacon to double to tank).
Without the Glyph of Divinity, it can still be used as a small mana battery for yourself. Cast it on your tank and you'll get 1950 mana, cast it on yourself, and you'll get 3900 mana. Not that great, but if you're in a pinch, trying to push everything over for a kill, it may help.
Mouseover macro using an Audio option that works perfectly on patch days:
#showtooltip Lay on Hands
/cast [target=mouseover,help][help,nodead][target=targettarget, help,nodead] Lay on Hands
/in 660 /script PlaySoundFile("Interface\\AddOns\\theholypaladin\\lay-on-hands.wav")
/script UIErrorsFrame:Clear()
This is the option that I use.
