Raiding While Fatigued

Fatigue is a topic that I haven't seen covered when related to healing, but it's a very important thing to consider when evaluating a healers performance and can be something that could be dragging your performance down. The reason that I thought about this is I've been plagued by it lately :(

Symptoms can include:

  • Chronic tiredness or sleepiness
  • Headache
  • Dizziness
  • Sore or aching muscles
  • Muscle weakness
  • Slowed reflexes and responses
  • Impaired decision making and judgment
  • Moodiness, such as irritability
  • Impaired hand to eye coordination
  • Appetite loss
  • Reduced immune system function
  • Blurry vision
  • Short term memory problems
  • Poor concentration
  • Hallucinations
  • Reduced ability to pay attention to the situation at hand
  • Low motivation.

It's important to understand the sources of fatigue, so if it hits you, you're going to be better able to identify the sources. Note. These aren't the only sources, but some that are most common to gamers.

Lack of sleep:
Most adults need about 8 hours of sleep nightly. For one reason or another, we cut our sleep down, sometimes below the point where we are able to function properly.

Alcohol, Cigarettes and drugs:
Depressant drugs (alcohol and others) can disturb your sleep. Alcohol often also has an added effect of slowing down your reactions and can dumb down your thinking process. Stimulants (caffeine, cigarettes and others) can also disturb your sleep in the opposite way.

Lack of regular exercise and sedentary behavior:
This is a big killer for gamers. We all know that sitting for massively long periods of time in front of a computer isn't healthy, but most of us still ignore our own common sense. Physical activity is known to improve fitness, health, reduce stress, and boost energy levels. It also helps you sleep. Regular exercise is highly suggested.

Poor diet:
Diets that are low in Kilojoule's or low in carbs, even high-energy foods (junk food) which are nutritionally poor don't give you enough energy or nutrients to function at your peak. Chocolates, soft drinks and other junk food can give you a temporary energy boost, but when it wears off you're often in a worse place than when you started.

Burnout:
By going too hard in one area of your life where other areas are being neglected. This can happen to hard core raiders who concentrate too much on raiding, or others who spend too much time and focus working. Keeping a balanced life can help combating this.

Where to get help?

Unfortunately, if you're unable to work out the cause and the fix to the problem, then you're most likely going to need to see a doctor to help work it out.

While this topic doesn't directly relate to healing, indirectly it can affect either yourself or other raiders. Scheduled breaks and/or holidays and taking better care of yourself can make the world of difference to your raiding performance.
