The Holy Paladin's Guide to the best Stats

February 6, 2009

Stats Summary:

Get all the key Stats in moderation. These Stats combine together very well.
The Key Stats are: Spell Power, Intellect, Crit Rating, Haste Rating
Stats not to avoid, but would prefer not to get:  Mp5
Stats to Avoid:  Spirit, Strength
Rule of thumb:  If in doubt, get Spell Power

Stick to those rules and it’s hard to go wrong with a Holy Paladin.

Slightly Longer Summary:

Contrary to popular belief, stacking one stat to the detriment to all other stats is really bad for a Holy Paladin.  Not that it really matters. Its virtually impossible to stack your stats if you want some half decent gear.  Thankfully for many Holy Paladins out there, most gear has a range of stats.

Which one is best for me?
It all depends on what issue’s your having while healing and/or what style of healing you are doing.

Running low on Mana?  You need to increase what you can do.
Option 1:  Increasing your healing capacity through bigger Mana pools and more Mana regeneration.  This means more Intellect.
Option 2: Increasing the efficiency of your healing spells, which means going for Spell Power or Crit.

Ending your fights with heaps of Mana?  You need to heal harder:
To do that you should look at Haste or Spell Power.

Dying in a fight where others are easily surviving?  Consider Stamina.

Read through this and you’ll get a better feel for which stat will suit you best.  Hopefully by the end, you’ll have a better understanding of what stats do for a Holy Paladin.  Oh, and don’t bother trying to memorize all the tables and data in here, you’ll only give yourself a headache.  Feel free to come back and reference it anytime you want.

Intellect

Intellect is one of our most important stats as a Holy Paladin.  It affects our mana pool, provides a bonus to healing, and also gives us extra healing power through crit. Intellect also increases our Crit, which helps our mana regeneration.

1 Intellect = +15 Mana

Percentage Boosts to intellect are multiplied together. This includes:
+2% from Meta Gems
+15% from Divine Intellect
+10% from Blessing of Kings

Note: The order of how the buffs are applied is irrelevant.

The Talent Divine Intellect gives you a 15% bonus to intellect.  This means, for every point of intellect you get, you actually get 1.15 points.
This stacks with the Meta gems that increase intellect by 2%
Also stacks with Blessing of Kings which increase intellect by 10%
Blessing of Kings With all three, each point in intellect can actually be worth 1.2903.  To come up with this number, you must multiple the numbers together, not add them. 1.15 * 1.02 * 1.1.

Intellect also increases your Critical Strike rating. 166.6667 points of Intellect equals 1% of Crit Percent.

5 points of Intellect equal 1 point of +spell power with the Talent Holy Guidance.

Throughout this site, there are tables on what benefits intellect will give each item or buff.

Critical Strike

Pardon the pun, but Critical Strike is a critically important stat for Holy Paladins.  Crit gives us more heals through our spells critting, and when we crit, we also receive a mana rebate through the Holy Talent Illumination .

45.91 Critical Strike Rating = 1% Crit
166.6667 Intellect = 1% Crit

How healing is effected by Crit:
When you cast a spell, there is a percentage chance that it will Critically Strike (Crit) your target, determined by your Crit Chance, found in your spell stats on your character sheet.  If you have a 20% Crit, then on average 1 heal out of 5 will Crit.   If this happens, your heal will heal for 50% more.

How mana regeneration is effected by Crit:
With help from the Holy Talent Illumination , we get a refund mana refund when we crit.  The amount of mana we get back is 60% of the base mana cost of the spell without and spell or talent modifiers.  That means, you can receive a discount on the spell cost but this talent will still refund you the mana based on the full mana cost.

The amount of mana refunded depends on the spell:

Spell Name
Mana Refund when Spell Crits
Mana Cost of Spell
184.2
307
764.4
1274
474
790

With this information, we can see what your Mp5 will be depending on what spell you continually cast and your Crit and what the average amount mana you will get back based on your Crit Chance.
This is why more Crit is not just good…. Crit is great for Holy Paladins.

As you can see, your Mp5 rates you get from crit grow at the same rate as your haste.

Blessing of Kings does not directly increase your Crit Rating.  It increases Intellect which in turn, but since Crit Rating is not a base Stat, Blessing of Kings will not directly affect it.

Wall of text crits you for 50000.

Haste:

Haste is also an interesting attribute for the Holy Paladin.  It allows you to increase the healing speed.  It takes a little to get your head around haste, so I’ll try to explain it and help you work it out as best I can.

32.79 of Haste Rating = 1% Haste

In a raid you can get the following buffs:

Note: The Haste parts of Swift Retribution and Improved Moonkin do not stack, so even if you have both in your raid, you’ll only receive the benefit from one of them.

This equates to 24.37% Spell Haste assuming you get both the moonkin aura and the Shammy totem and can keep your Judgements of the Pure up.  This is called Passive Haste, since you don’t have to build up your Haste Rating to get this.

Wait!  15% + 3% + 5% = 23% right?
Yes, but that’s not how it works.  I’ll explain and give you an example.

Haste Effects stack multiplicatively, however Haste Rating does not.  Haste Rating has to be added with other haste rating.

How do I tell what’s which?
Well its quite simple.  If something says, “Improves Haste Rating by x” then its Haste Rating.  If something says, “Increases haste by x%” then its a Haste Effect.

When calculating your Haste, first add everything you get haste rating from (Gear, Elixir’s, Potions).  Take that number and divide it by 32.79 (or do what most people do, look it up on your character sheet).  It’ll give you a number like 12%.

Now with everything, that becomes a percentage above 1.  For the maths people, divide it by 100 and add one to the total.  For you folk like me, 12% becomes 1.12; 20% becomes 1.2; 30% becomes 1.3; 5% becomes 1.05 and so on.

Ok, now what?
You multiply it all together.

For example:
[Your Haste 1.12] * [Judgements of the Pure 1.15] * [Improved Moonkin 1.03] * [Wrath of Air 1.05] = 1.392972.

How fast will my spells cast?  Divine the spells casting time by that number:
Flash of Light: 1.5sec / 1.392973 = 1.0768sec
Holy Light: 2.5sec / 1.392973 = 1.7947sec

How does this work with the Talent Light’s Grace, where my Holy Lights get half a second faster?
It’ll take away the half a second casting discount before the Haste is applied. Eg.
Holy Light: 2sec / 1.392873 = 1.43577sec

What makes this even more interesting, haste has the benefit of allowing you to reduce the Global Cooldown from the usual 1.5 seconds.  The Minimum the Global Cooldown can be after Haste is applied is 1 second.

How fast do your spells cast (in Seconds) with Haste Rating.  Assumes no Haste Effects, only Haste Rating.

Flash of Light & Holy Shock Effective Haste Cap?
Its something that you have to pay attention to if you’re casting Flash of Light non-stop.   With the 24.37% Passive Haste you have, 675 more Haste Rating from gear down to 1 sec casts, where any further haste will get eaten up by the Global Cooldown.  Yes, you will be able to cast faster than 1 second if you get more haste, but you will not be able to cast anything until the 1 second is up.

Wait..  What has that got to do with Holy Shock?  Its an instant.  Yes, its true Holy Shock is an instant, but the Haste will reduce the time you need to wait to be able to cast another spell.

Holy Light Effective Haste Cap?
It isn’t really going to happen, but just supposed you wanted to know, you’d need to have 1993 more Haste Rating above the 24.37 Passive Haste to bring Holy Light down to 1sec casts.  With Heroism active, and the Passive Haste you’d only need 777 Haste Rating, which isn’t too hard to hit.

Note: There is a spell called Heroism. While not really haste, it acts just like it.  Heroism does: +30% casting speed for 40 seconds, but you cannot get it again for 5 minutes after this effect completes.  It stacks with pretty much everything.

The Kings buff does not increase your haste rating.

Mp5

This stands for Mana gained Per 5 seconds.

There are two types, Mp5 While Casting, and Mp5 While Not Casting

Mp5 = 5 * (0.001 + sqrt(Intellect) * Spirit * Base_Regeneration) Rounded Up
At level 80, your Base Regeneration is 0.005575

Basic rule of thumb, the more spirit and intellect (to a lesser extent) the higher your Mp5 While Not Casting is.

The 5 Second Rule:
After you do anything that uses mana, its uses the Mp5 While Casting mana regeneration for the next 5 seconds. Seeing that Holy Paladins are almost always casting, you are going to pretty much be basing your mana regeneration on your Mp5 While Casting.

All Gear, gems, elixir’s, flasks and raid effects that adds to your Mp5, increases your Mp5 While Casting.

Mp5 does not scale with Blessing of Kings or other enhancement buffs.

While itemization is covered in the gear section, it should be noted that 1 Mp5 is the same as 2.5 Intellect.

Taking into consideration of buffs given through talents, a common raid buff (Blessing of Kings) and a 2% Int Meta Gem, 1 point of Mp5 is worth.
First line is with the talent Divine intellect only.  2nd line also with Blessing of Kings and the 3rd line, also with the 2% Intellect Meta Gem.

What hurts the Mp5 Stat is nothing scales with it or for it.  So as your gear improves, Mp5 continues to give you the same benefit.

If you were to put the points into other Stats like +Spell Power, Intellect, Crit Rating or Haste Rating, as your gear improves, you’ll gain an increased benefit.

Intellect is an exceptional replacement stat for Mp5 simply for the benefits gained from Divine Plea with a high amount of Intellect.

Early on, when your gear is ordinary at best, Mp5 does have its benefits, but as your gear improves, you should shed off your Mp5 in favor to Stats that are more beneficial and scale better.

Stamina

I’ve heard the saying many times, “A dead healer does no heals”.  It is so true.
1 Point of Stamina = 10 Health
Stamina scales with Blessing of Kings.  So with Kings, 1 Point really = 11 Health.

Stamina (stam) is not a stat that I would suggest to build up to concentrate on.  As your gear improves, your stam will improve naturally.

There are fights where you will die unless you have above a certain amount of Health raid buffed.

Its just something to keep in mind and scramble for if you suddenly fall short.

Raid Buffs Available:
Prayer of Fortitude Rank 4
Power infuses all party and raid members, increasing their Stamina by 165 for 1.00 hour.
Cast by: Priests

Also Available:
[Scroll of Stamina VIII]
Use: Increases the target's Stamina by 132 for 30 min.

Spirit

Spirit is a Stat that we simply avoid.  All stats are better placed in other.  Our lack of Spirit is the reason why Druids don’t cast Innervate on us.

Spirit would help a Holy Paladin recover mana and health out of combat, but sitting down and drinking would be better than wasting stats on something we don’t use in a battle.

Spell Power

I cannot resist another pun.  Spell Power is a powerful stat for Holy Paladins.

Spell Power itself doesn’t scale, it requires other stats to scale well.  Crit and Haste both help scale better with high Spell Power.

What Spell Power is important to a Holy Paladin, because it increases your Heals Per Second (HPS) and while at the same time, increasing your Heals Per Mana (HPM).  Crit also increases HPS and HPM, but Spell Power does it in a more consistent and predictable manner. Haste increases your Heals Per Second by allowing you to cast more heals.

Couple Spell Power, Haste and Crit all together and you’ve got faster, bigger, cheaper heals.  It’s the Holy Paladin Trifecta.

Another thing to know, 1 point of Spell Power is worth different amounts depending on what spell is used and whether it is being used to heal or with an offensive spell.

Spell Power Coefficient

Flash of Light (Rank 9)

1.26

Holy Light (Rank 13)

2.17

Holy Shock (Rank 7)

1.05

What is a Spell Power Coefficient?
It is how each Spell Power point effects each spell and by how much.

You determine how a spell heals by the following formula:
[Spell Base Healing Amount]  +  ( [Spell Power] * [Spell Power Coefficient] )

For example:
Lets say you have +1500 Spell Power.  Casting Flash of Light, this would be:
[Base Healing 788 to 883] + ( 1500 * 1.26 )
[Base Healing 788 to 883] + 1890
So that means Flash of Light will heal for 2678 to 2773.

Example 2:
Lets  say you have +1900 Spell Power. Casting Holy Light, this would be:
[Base Healing 4888 to 5444] + (1900 * 2.17)
So that means Holy Light will heal for 9011 to 9567
