Settlers of Catan is considered by a lot of people to be the number #1 board game in the 3 to 4 player category.
If you play any board games, get Settlers of Catan. You will be happy you did.
Settlers of Catan from Mayfair Games is an award-winning game where players collect resources and use them to build roads, settlements and cities. Games usually last between 60 and 90 minutes and is suitable for players of age 10 and higher.
The first player to collect 10 victory points wins. Each settlement you build is worth one point and each city is worth two. There are special ways to get extra points by building the Longest Road or building the Largest Army. You can get points through development cards.
In each turn of Settlers of Catan, players will roll two dice which determine which resources players get. You can trade those resources with other players (or the bank at really bad rates) and/or build roads, settlements, upgrade your settlements to cities or buy special cards called development cards.
Settlers of Catan is a non-combat game and has a high social element to it. Where most board games appeal mainly to males, settlers appeals to both sexes.
The best thing about Settlers of Catan is its ability to be played again and again. Every game you play will turn out different which will keep this game fresh for a long, long time. After many years, I still love this game. This makes Settlers of Catan great value for you.
One warning should go out: While Settlers of Catan is the best game in the 3-4 player category, it is a rather poor two player game.
Optional Extras: The 5-6 Player Expansion.
If you have enough friends to have a 5 or 6 player game, it's well worth it. You will need Settlers of Catan itself as the 5-6 Player Expansion gives you additional player pieces, more resource tiles.
The rules also change. In the 5-6 player version you by getting to 12 points. You also get to build after each players turn.
5-6 player games do go on a little longer, the extra time is well worth it.
